For those who did filing electronically, the waiting period to receive tax refund is three weeks. Since the process is same as the paper filing, it is advisable to use electronic filing. Whatever be the case, if the refund is not in the mail yet, it is time to think of reasons for the delay.
- The most usual reason for delay is that the papers are still being reviewed. Often, there are many refund cases that have to be assessed. In such a case, you would receive a letter from IRS stating the same and giving the review status of your refund.
- Taxpayer errors such as a typo in filling the forms is another possible reason for delay. Many times it a typo in the name, address or street number, and this would be enough to keep your check from coming to you. It is wise to cross check the tax form before and after filling it. In 2008, over 100,000 refunds were sent back by the Postal Service because of errors in address.
- Similarly, poor handwriting or wrong figures could be a reason. Incorrect numbers could be a cause of trouble, so better look out!
- Tax obligations are another reason. When there is such a thing, the IRS usually informs the taxpayer about it. Mostly, a refund will not be sent.
If the mail did not make it after checking all the possible reasons for delay, it is best to check the IRS website with the filing status, Social Security number and the total amount of refund. Above all, there is no need to worry. Going by a logical checklist, you would be able to figure out the glitch that is holding back your tax refund check.
