There are many places in the country which do not tax retirement income for example Alaska, South Dakota, Nevada, Washington and Wyoming. These states somehow do not subject their residents to state income tax. It must be noted that these states do not tax income due to less generation of it. So they compensate this loss by having high property and sales taxes. It is due to this fact that these states are low in taxing income and hence, people who are looking to save their retirement income from getting taxed settle down in these places.
There are also states which do not tax pensions. Some of these states are Illinois, Hawaii, Alabama, Michigan, Mississippi and New York. Once you know you have saved enough to live in any of these places, it is important to note that every place has its own cost of living. Living in a place which has a high cost of living will not help as the saving will go in paying for basic amenities. It is important to know what your budget of living is and then consider states accordingly.
In addition, you should also be aware that just because a state does not tax retirement income, it does not mean that you are not liable to pay federal taxes. Keep this in mind when you are relocating.
