Neighbors Are Not Paying Their Fair Share In Property Taxes
The property taxes are calculated depending on the full-market value of a community. Often, because of improper reassessment, there arise situations that are not fair between neighbors. For example, you might have a house that is almost the same size as your neighbor, perhaps even smaller. But, you pay $20,000 as taxes whereas your neighbor gets to pay only $7,000. This is the kind of imbalance that arises with the taxation system. |

Usually, longtime home owners get this kind of unfair advantage over their newly arrived neighbors, because of their stand. There have been initiatives such as ‘Save Our Homes’, also known as SOH, to defend them. However, it does not seem clear as to why certain people end up paying next to nothing as property taxes, while their neighbor has to pay really huge amounts of tax. People who support such initiatives are not necessarily benefiting the society.
The problem arises because of the lack of reassessment in properties. There are places in the United States where some properties have not been assessed since before World War II. So, only now, laws are beginning to open up and the option of reassessment is coming into light while calculating property tax.
Local political scenarios must also change, if there would be a fair property tax rate for everyone. Clever people tend to elect officials who would put off reassessment, thus behaving in a complacent manner. Property tax would only be fair if the factors such as reassessment and basics like the square footage of the area and so on, would come into play to calculate one’s share.
So, if your neighbor is not paying as much tax as you are, the best thing for them and you would be to get a reassessment done to ensure justice to all.
