How Do I Add A Fraud Alert To My Credit Report ?

These days it is better to be cautious with financial transaction than suffer later. Everywhere you hear about credit card frauds and scams. For creditors to be safe there are several facilities like credit card locking and fraud alert systems. The fraud alert message notifies the creditors in such a way that they will ask for identification.

In case someone else is using your information, you will come to know of it immediately. Fraud alert messages are free, and you can easily add it in case you suspect someone using your credit report or using your information fraudulently. You can just call your credit union and get the facility added on. The credit union will put an alert on your report for a period of 90 days. In this period, whoever is using your information needs to prove identity first.

It is also possible to add extended fraud alert to your existing report. For this you will need to submit a valid copy of the theft report to the federal law enforcement. The extended report will show on your report for seven years. Some credit unions charge for extended services and some may just give it for free.

However, due to the current scenario where there are too many credit card frauds and scams, the credit reporting agencies are offering the fraud alert for free. Everyone should actually add some basic security measures to their credit cards and also the credit report. A person can add such alerts for a maximum period of one year for free on the credit reports.
